Where we stop

The work we do not take on at PLJN Capital

  • We don't fund start-ups without trading history, however neat the pitch deck looks.
  • Vendors who want us to value a business on forecast alone are turned down, since we only work from filed accounts.
  • We decline any deal where the owner plans to stay on indefinitely, as we buy to hand over.
  • If a sector needs a licence we don't already hold, we pass on it rather than learn on your time.

How we got here

A small team that buys and runs established businesses

PLJN Capital is the trading name of PLJN HOLDINGS LIMITED. We buy majority stakes in small and medium-sized companies across the United Kingdom, the sort with steady customers, real assets and an owner who is ready to step back. It is plain work, done carefully, and we say so up front.

Our approach comes from the shop floor rather than a fund. Between us we have run depots, workshops and trade counters, so we know what a full order book looks like and what a thin one looks like. When we read a set of accounts, we ask the questions an operator would ask.

We take a controlling interest because it lets us make decisions quickly and keep promises. Sellers usually stay for a handover of three to twelve months, and we agree that timetable before heads of terms, not after. Staff hear from us early, in person, not through a memo.

Funding is arranged deal by deal, mostly from our own resources and a small circle of long-standing backers. We are not chasing a fund cycle or a quick exit. If a company keeps its margins and looks after its people, we are content to hold it for years.

The businesses we buy keep their own names, their own sites and their own customers. What changes is the paperwork behind them: management accounts arrive monthly, budgets get agreed, and decisions stop resting on one person. That is the whole of our method.

What a handover actually looks like on the ground

Most of our time goes on site visits, stock counts and long conversations with the people who run the place day to day. A deal is only as good as the first year after completion, so that is where we put our attention.
